Как и Фрейд, Юнг использовал термин "бессознательное" двояким образом: для обозначения недоступных Я психических процессов и для обозначения психической системы с собственными законами, характером и функциями. Однако Юнг рассматривал бессознательное не только как вместилище вытесненных, как правило детских, переживаний и полагал, что бессознательное представляет еще и форму психической активности, выходящей за пределы личного опыта и непосредственно соотносимой с филогенетической, инстинктивной основой человечества. По Юнгу, содержание коллективного бессознательного никогда не было сознательным; оно отражает лишь влияние архетипических процессов. Выражаясь метафорически, Юнг говорил о коллективном бессознательном как о форме знания, даже мышления. На языке философии это можно выразить понятием "первопричина" психологических тенденций и направлений развития — "то, ради чего" все происходит и осуществляется. Хотя Юнг не говорил, что бессознательное является действительной причиной происходящего, человек может переживать первопричины, действующие в сфере бессознательного, как то, что способствует возникновению паттернов и смыслов жизни индивида.
